“Whoever saves a single life is considered to have saved the entire world.” The Talmud
The theme of this year’s Glastonbury’s Holocaust Remembrance Project is the Righteous Among the Nations, a commemoration of non-Jewish individuals and groups who acted to protect and save Jews from Nazi genocide. In addressing this theme, you are welcome to reference any website, book, or online information you wish. Three sites you may find extremely helpful are Yadvashem.org, JFR.org (Jewish Foundation for the Righteous), and YouTube Yad Vashem Who are the Righteous Among the Nations – Animated Concepts. Your answers must cite sources so judges can consult them as needed. Quotes must be attributed. Consider what you have learned in school, in faith communities, and/or on your own to answer each of the following:
QUESTION 1:
Choose one individual or an organization or community and in no more than two paragraphs briefly tell the story of what she/he/they did to save Jews. Did the response show evidence and cite documentation about an individual or group identified as the Righteous Among the Nations?
1: no evidence
2: weak evidence
3: good evidence
4: strong comprehensive evidence
QUESTION 2:
What drove rescuers to save Jews (those they knew as well as total strangers) when doing so carried the certain risk of torture and/or death to themselves, family, and friends? What compelled them to act when others remained silent? Are rescuers heroes or ordinary people who perform heroic acts? Does the quality of the students’ work demonstrate substance, reflection and insight?
1: no evidence
2: weak evidence
3: good evidence
4: strong evidence
QUESTION 3:
What can you do as an individual to stand up against antisemitism and hate? The student expressed his/her/their ideas clearly and developed them cogently and
convincingly?
1: no evidence
